horse exchange 1 is an edited recording of a Zoom call between Lee (me) and Baek (a friend). During the session, we engage in shitty translations. This process deliberately subverts conventional translation methods, resulting in intentionally bad or ā€œincorrectā€ interpretations.

Over twenty minutes, Baek and I take turns translating each other's expressions, using a fluid range of languages including Korean, English, photographs, handwriting, laughter, and movements on our shared virtual whiteboard. The work's dynamic nature, incorporating motion and interaction, cannot be captured in a single frame. A voiceover commentary accompanies the video, attempting to guide viewers through our translation exchanges, though it too maintains a degree of interpretive distance.

horse exchange 2 is an AI’s attempt at a shitty translation of the first video, horse exchange 1. All of the horses(responses) exchanged during our Zoom session were reduced into screenshots, and those images were fed into a free online image caption-generating AI.
